What is Fat Tuesday?

Fat Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras, is the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter, during which many Christians engage in fasting, repentance, and spiritual reflection.

Fat Tuesday is a day of celebration and feasting before the more somber and reflective season of Lent begins. The name "Fat Tuesday" refers to the tradition of consuming rich, fatty foods as a way to use up ingredients like butter, sugar, and meat before the fasting period of Lent. It is a time for indulgence, merriment, and revelry, often marked by festive events, parades, and parties.

One of the most famous celebrations of Fat Tuesday occurs in New Orleans, where Mardi Gras festivities are known for their elaborate costumes, colorful masks, lively music, and vibrant street parades. In other cultures and regions, similar celebrations take place with their own unique traditions and customs, all centered around enjoying food, fun, and community before the more introspective season of Lent begins.

What Should You Know before Heading to a Mardi Gras Party?

You will want to wear the traditional Mardi Gras colors of Green, Gold and Purple.  Rex, the King of Carnival, selected the Mardi Gras colors and assigned meaning to them in 1892. Purple stands for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.  Mardi Gras party goers know to wear long beads caught from the floats of previous parades. You'll likely see a lot of crazy and amazing costumes, kids with their families are everywhere, and both locals and visitors to New Orleans having a great time.  Be ready to have fun!
