From sunscreen to snacks, having the right items on hand can make a world of difference in keeping your little ones happy and comfortable throughout the day. In this blog post, we'll cover the must-pack items for taking kids to a theme park, so you can focus on having fun without worrying about missing anything important.

18 Must Pack Items for Theme Parks with Kids

What Is the Best Age to Take your Children to a Theme Parks?

There is no right or wrong age to take your child to a theme park!

The ideal age for taking kids to theme parks can vary depending on several factors, including the child's temperament, interests, and the specific park you plan to visit. However, many parents find that children between the ages of 4 and 12 tend to enjoy theme parks the most. Here's why:

  1. Height Requirements: Most theme park rides have height restrictions for safety reasons. Children who are at least 40 inches tall (typically around 4 years old) can usually ride a wide variety of attractions, opening up more options for family fun.

  2. Interest and Engagement: Children in the 4 to 12 age range are often at a stage where they are curious, adventurous, and easily excited by new experiences. They're more likely to appreciate the immersive environments, characters, and thrill rides that theme parks offer.

  3. Physical Abilities: At this age, kids are generally more physically capable of walking long distances and standing in lines for extended periods, which are common requirements at theme parks.

  4. Safety Awareness: Older children in this age group tend to have a better understanding of safety rules and can follow instructions more reliably, reducing the need for constant supervision.

  5. Memorable Experience: Children who are old enough to remember the experience are more likely to cherish the memories made at the theme park, making it a worthwhile investment for families.

However, every child is unique, and some may be ready for theme park adventures earlier or later than others. Additionally, some theme parks offer special areas or attractions designed specifically for younger children, making them suitable for family visits with toddlers and preschoolers as well.

Ultimately, the best age for taking kids to theme parks is when they are old enough to meet height requirements, express interest in the attractions, and have the stamina to enjoy a full day of fun. It's also important to consider your child's individual preferences and comfort level with crowds, noise, and excitement. With careful planning and consideration, a trip to the theme park can be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

The perks of taking a child under 3 is that they are typically free which can be great for parents looking for a deal.  However, the downside of taking a child under 3 to a theme park is that there may not be many things they can ride.  However, some theme parks, like Legoland Florida will have an entire section of the theme park dedicated to toddler and preschoolers. You can read more about how Legoland attracts the toddler population here.

Most theme parks design their rides and attractions for the 7 and older crowd of children.  What I love about traveling with my child this age is that he can ride most if not all rides at theme parks, he will remember the visit to the park and can understand concepts like waiting in line etc.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Take your Children to a Theme Park?

The best time of year to visit a theme park can vary depending on several factors, including weather, crowd levels, special events, and personal preferences. Here are some considerations to help you determine the optimal time for your visit:

  1. Off-Peak Seasons: If you want to avoid large crowds and long lines, consider visiting during off-peak times such as weekdays during the school year (excluding holidays and breaks). Many theme parks experience significantly lower attendance during these times, allowing you to enjoy shorter wait times for attractions.

  2. Weather: Check the climate of the region where the theme park is located and plan your visit during a season with mild temperatures and minimal precipitation. For example, spring and fall often offer pleasant weather with fewer extreme temperatures and storms, making them popular times for park visits.

  3. Special Events: Research any special events or festivals hosted by the theme park throughout the year. These events can add extra excitement and entertainment to your visit but may also attract larger crowds. If you're interested in attending specific events, plan your visit accordingly.

  4. Holidays: Major holidays like Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving, and Independence Day are popular times for theme park visits, often leading to higher attendance and increased prices. Consider visiting during non-holiday periods to avoid the crowds and potentially save on admission costs.

  5. Park Operations: Some theme parks have seasonal closures or reduced operating hours during certain times of the year, particularly during the winter months. Check the park's schedule in advance to ensure it will be open on the dates you plan to visit.

  6. Personal Preferences: Consider your own preferences and priorities when choosing the best time to visit. If you prefer warmer weather and don't mind larger crowds, summer might be ideal for you. Alternatively, if you prioritize shorter wait times and cooler temperatures, shoulder seasons like spring or fall might be more suitable.

Ultimately, the best time to visit a theme park depends on a combination of factors, including your schedule, preferences, and priorities. By considering the factors mentioned above and planning your visit accordingly, you can maximize your enjoyment and make the most of your theme park experience.

We always travel to theme parks during the week and during non-peak travel time.  We find that going during the week and when others are typically at school and work create so much more of an enjoyable theme park experience for the entire family.

Not only will lines be shorter for theme park rides, but you will save so much money by traveling in the off season too which means more money for theme park trips.

What Are the Best Theme Parks for Young Children?

There are no right answers on which theme park is best to visit with small kids because there are SO many amazing theme parks to visit in the United States.  Our family absolutely LOVED Legoland Florida and had an amazing experience at Legoland Pirate Island Resort, Legoland Florida Theme Park and the Legoland Florida Water Park.  We also enjoy smaller theme parks near us in Virginia, like Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion.

Our small children also absolutely loved Great Wolf Lodge as well.  You can read more about why we loved our stay at Great Wolf Lodge and how much they enjoyed the indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge as well.  Universal Studios and Universal Orlando Resort is another destination that my family has loved for a theme park vacation.  Everyone knows that Disney parks are a favorite but weve had great experiences at the theme parks mentioned above, and had more fun there than our Disney amusement park trip.

What Kind of Bag Should I Take to an Amusement Park?

I would highly recommend using a backpack at a theme park.  Your bag may get wet, will likely be taken in and out of ride cubbies and small areas, and tossed around all day.  Using a backpack is not only functional but no need to stress if it gets dirty or wet.  I love adding a pin or a ribbon to the strap of my backpack so I can grab it quickly from a ride cubby as well.  I like having ziploc bags ready to put credit cards for water rides and other essential items in my theme park bag.

How Should I Dress My  Children for a Theme Park Trip?

Comfortable clothing and shoes are a must.  As a boy mom, I always dress my boys in athletic apparel at theme parks.  Thick comfortable socks and tennis shoes are a must for tons of walking at a theme park.  Moisture wicking shirts are really helpful during hot days at a theme park.

One thing that helps me as a safety feature with the boys too is dressing them all in matching neon / bright shirts.  This helps me keep track of them at a busy theme park and help me feel much less stressed.  Having a extra layer if you are traveling during a time when mother nature is all over the place is great so family members do not get too cold or hot.

Packing List and Theme Park Essentials

  • Stroller Fan Stroller fans can be so helpful to beat the heat on a theme park during the summer months. I also love having a stroller fan available even when it’s not really hot to create white noise and air flow for a baby and or toddler who needs to nap while at the theme park.

  • We have owned this fan for 5 years and have loved it. It has a replaceable and rechargeable battery with 2.5~6 hours working time. You can adjust the speed and USB charge from a computer, power band, USB Charger. This fan is light and can clip on to stroller and easily adjustable. We use this regularly when at home and not at theme parks too! Great purchase at 19.99$.

  • Cooling Towels These cooling towels will be a MUST have on hot days at a theme park whether you are traveling with kids or not. Grab a 4 pack (or more for bigger families) to wipe off sweat or cool down when overheated and exhausted. These cooling towels stay cool for hours and are easy to clean. These come in handy outside of theme park visits at sporting events or the pool when at home!

  • Portable Fan with Mister We love these SO MUCH. At 10$ price point, grab a few and have on hand for the summer when standing in a long line at a theme park and also use around town in the summer and at sports practices! These are without a doubt the best money spent ever.

  • Power Pack for Phones Lifesaver and without a doubt will need during long days and nights at Disney to stay in touch with family and be able to capture pictures and videos. I highly recommend grabbing 2 of these!

  • Rain Poncho’s Do not get caught off guard by the rain and buy overpriced ponchos at the park. Grab this family pack for the price that you would pay for 1 at the park.

  • Sunscreen Sunscreen is mandatory for the hot sunny Florida weather. My absolute fave brand is Sun Bum for our entire family. It rubs in easily, smells amazing, and is perfect for sensitive skin.

  • Hand Sanitizer Spray hand sanitizer is my best friend as a mom of 3. The small bottle is easy to throw in my fanny pack or back pocket at a theme park and spray everyone’s hands down since my kids are little and TOUCH ALL OF THE THINGS (Yuck).

  • Refillable Water Bottles The bigger the better in my opinion. These bottles will keep water cold for 24 hours. I often find myself refilling the kids water bottles from mine when we are at theme parks and thats why I advocate for buying a MASSIVE water bottle for the adults in your party.

  • Extra clothes for kids Even for older kids who have been potty trained for a while having extra underwear, socks, and clothes is a great idea. You will not want to have to buy clothing in the park if someone spills, gets wet on a ride, or has an accident so rolling the clothes and putting in a gallon bag will be good to have just in case.

  • Band-Aids: These adhesive bandages are a must-have for any theme park adventure. Whether it's a small scrape from a ride or a blister from walking, having Band-Aids on hand ensures you can quickly address minor injuries and keep the fun going.

  • Cell Phone Water Protector Case: Protect your phone from water damage with a water-resistant phone case. This accessory provides peace of mind, allowing you to capture photos and stay connected even on water rides or in case of unexpected rain showers.

  • Hats: A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap offers valuable protection from the sun's rays, helping to prevent sunburn and keep you cool throughout the day. Choose a lightweight, breathable hat that provides adequate shade for your face and neck.

  • Sunglasses: Shield your eyes from the bright sun and glare with a pair of sunglasses. Not only do sunglasses reduce eye strain and discomfort, but they also add a stylish touch to your theme park ensemble.

  • Chapstick: Spending a day outdoors can lead to dry, chapped lips, especially in sunny or windy conditions. Keep your lips moisturized and protected with a hydrating lip balm or chapstick containing SPF to prevent sun damage.

  • Waterproof Phone Case: In addition to protecting your phone from water damage, a waterproof phone case also shields it from dirt, dust, and accidental drops. It's a valuable accessory for any theme park visit, providing added durability and peace of mind.

  • Baby Wipes: These versatile wipes come in handy for a variety of purposes at the theme park. Use them to clean sticky hands and faces, wipe down surfaces before eating, or freshen up during long days of excitement and adventure.

Individualized chips, crackers, favorite snacks for your kiddos for long lines and snacks while in the parks. Save your money for meals!

Should I Bring a Stroller to the Amusement Park?

Even for older kids who do not ride in a stroller in everyday life, you really should consider a stroller for a long day at a theme park with miles of walking.  If you don’t own a stroller for everyday use, you can rent one at the park.  We took our Double BOB to Disney World in 2020 since our 3 kids were all still major stroller riders.  There is no way we could have survived the park without it.  I highly recommend the BOB or double BOB at theme parks due to the ease of pushing and the storage available in the back and under.  We have the single and double BOB and HIGHLY recommend this brand.

Update: now that our children are not stroller riders anymore and we do not use a stroller in everyday life we do not take a stroller with us to theme parks.  But having the option to rent a stroller is an awesome back up should they get tired!  Kingdom Strollers is a great option for renting strollers if you are headed to Disney and most major theme parks offer their own stroller rentals too.

Download the Theme Park App

Download the theme park app before you go. Get familiar with the information on the app and how it would be helpful to you.  App’s make it so easy to navigate the park and find close bathrooms or dining instead of having to hold on to a paper map. This is an easy way to be sure that every family member of your family has fun!

What Should Parents Wear to an Amusement Park?

Comfortable shoes are KEY!  I love to layer depending on the weather at the theme park too.  Denim shorts are a great option with a graphic tee or top.  Something comfortable and breathable is important as you will be doing a ton of walking.  Try to shy away from wearing black as you will get really hot really fast!

My husband also agrees that comfortable tennis shoes are a must. He swears by his Bamboo Ave. shorts which are breathable and stylish! Grab a favorite comfortable tee and you are ready to go to the theme park.

Whether you are headed for a big theme park day like Walt Disney World or Legoland a local theme park to your city / state, being prepared will save your sanity and some money!  Thankfully if you do forget something, you can always grab it at the theme park, but I like to have everything to bring in because it saves a lot of money, time and stress.

A day at the theme park with your kids is sure to be filled with excitement and adventure, but it's essential to come prepared with the right supplies to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the whole family. By packing essentials like sunscreen, water bottles, snacks, comfortable shoes, and rain gear, you'll be well-equipped to handle whatever the day throws your way. Don't forget to prioritize safety with items like hand sanitizer, a first aid kit, and a portable phone charger to stay connected. With these must-pack items in tow, you can focus on making memories that will last a lifetime without worrying about missing anything crucial. So, grab your gear, round up the family, and get ready for a day of fun and adventure at the theme park!
